POCO BUENO is the story of every man's fantasy - escaping the life-numbing prison of his nine-to-five existence. Stokes is a 31-year-old executive in the lucrative Texas oil business. His marriage to the boss's daughter is on the skids and his true love, an over-restored 70-foot Hatteras fishing yacht, has him panicking in debt. Following his heart, and the naked-truth of his fun-loving boat captain sidekick Jean Paul, the two fishing buddies throw caution to the wind on a quest for genuine adventure and meaning. Like the ever-churning margarita blender onboard the boat, Poco Bueno is a crazy blend of thirty-something angst, bikini-clad willful women, testosterone-fueled antics, and off-the-charts fishing. Based on the very private, but oh-so-real, million-dollar Port O Connor Offshore Invitational Fishing Tournament held off the coast of Texas, this book might very well be the next great American western, albeit a watery one! Yes, this is a novel about fishing - fishing in one of its most savage and primordial forms - but it is really a story about the ultimate inevitability of what life serves up and our ability to eat well at the feast.

Poco Bueno Chris Parks 9780988975408 Books Reviews
I probably should have heard about or seen this book years ago. The character development is outstanding, but the story is told like a master. Hemingway fans will truly enjoy this. Hook'em
I read this at the coast, and it is a great beach book. Once I started I read it straight through in a day, too engrossed in the characters to put it down.
It isn't a mystery or murder novel, it is a book about people. It reminded me that we're all crazy in our own way, and it can be really entertaining watching how the interaction between all that crazy plays out. It is like a Jimmy Buffet song filled out with depth and background.
The ending felt like the natural ending to this story, but left me really wanting to continue with the characters. I'm hoping for a sequel.
Poco Bueno is the story of a blue-collar guy who has clawed his way inside the most hallowed halls of the Houston oil business only to find that he's got to claw his way back out if he doesn't want the piranhas of the River Oaks Country Club to to eat his soul alive. Stokes is far deeper and more multi-dimensional than the average khaki-clad, sport fishing, skirt-chasing, scotch-swilling Texas oil brat. While the book smacks of insider knowledge and high-dollar Gulf Coast testosterone, Poco Bueno is the story of one man's search for Something More. While Parks draws beautiful word pictures and conjures profound symbolism in his book, he gives the reader a fast-paced joy ride through the exclusive world of the Houston ultra-rich - the tits and ass come at no extra charge.
Wow so glad I had the opportunity to read this novel!! I can't remember the last time I was up until 2 in the morning reading a book ---when I didn't have to for work or school.
Loved it- everything was spot on- only been off shore a couple of times but the visual you painted of the sargassum floating and the bait-fish running was incredible- felt like I was really back out there
From page 1, I was "hooked"!! I wanted to be in that boat, in the fighting chair!
An interesting group of guys escaping the insanity of the "good life" to get down and dirty to win
the big one. The characters are well developed as are the plot and theme. The pages flew and I was almost in mourning when it ended! I'm giving this book to all the men in my life, and my all girl book club has adopted it for next month! Well done Mr. Parks! Outstanding debut!!! Now! Give us more!! Congrats on a job well done friend

I wouldn't call this a Pulizter Prize winner, but if you've fished before, then a good read. I've fished these waters and been to this tourney too so it brought some nostalgic memories - only, this ended the way it's supposed to! Parks does a good job telling a fishing story that continues to keep you reading.
First, you should know that I don't fish at all and really have no desire to. I chose the book because I noticed the 5 star reviews and wanted a good weekend read. Although the book does use a fishing tournament (Poco Bueno) as the backdrop, the book is more about a guy coming to the realization that his marriage is over and that his job (that pays him handsomely) is not really what he wants to do. Stokes (the main character) decides to go on a fishing tournament with some of his friends to get away from his issues at home and work. The adventures he has are both hilarious and heartwarming. Although the book is a self-contained story in and of itself, I would love to see another book (or two) featuring the same cast of characters. So, if you're looking for a book with an interesting backdrop with colorful characters, give this one a try.
